LAHORE: The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) yet again on Sunday vowed to make united efforts to repeal the controversial 17th Amendment.
The pledge came at a meeting between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif – who called on the prime minister in Lahore on Sunday. It was agreed at the meeting that both parties would cooperate to restore the 1973 Constitution by undoing the 17th Amendment and ensuring the implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD).
The two leaders discussed the overall political situation of the country, the local government system, the PPP-PML-N working relationship and the incorporation of CoD points – related to the appointment of judges – in the constitution.
Shahbaz congratulated Gilani on his successful visit to the NAM summit in Sharm Al-Sheikh and meetings with various heads of state, including the Indian prime minister.
Also, the prime minister invited the PML-N to rejoin the federal cabinet, to work with the government in resolving issues facing the country. However, Shahbaz said only the central executive committee of the PML-N was authorised to make a decision on the invitation.
Gilani said under the constitution, the local government system was a provincial subject, and the provinces were empowered to make a decision on the status and future of local bodies. He said the appointment of administrators in place of nazims also fell under the jurisdiction of provincial governments. He said the government was paying special attention to the development of South Punjab, but the federal and Punjab governments needed to work jointly to address the issues of the region.
Shahbaz briefed Gilani on the law and order situation in the province and the measures being taken to maintain public order across Punjab. He also handed over a detailed report on the July 21 riots against the power crisis to the prime minister. He assured the prime minister that action would be taken against those responsible.
Gilani said a meeting of all provincial chief ministers, to be presided over by him, would be convened in Islamabad to discuss the power crisis, the law and order situation and the creation of jobs.
The Punjab chief minister said the federal government should make all-out efforts to overcome the power crisis, as it was affecting the industrial sector of the province.
