Pakistan's government has announced the reinstatement of the deposed chief justice

Pakistan's government has announced the reinstatement of Iftikhar Chaudhry, the deposed chief justice, in a bid to defuse the country's political crisis and end a protest march that was threatening to turn into a violent confrontation. Yusuf Raza Gilani, the prime minister, said Chaudhry would be reinstated as Pakistan's supreme court chief justice on March 21, the day his replacement was due to retire. "I announce the restoration of all deposed judges, including Mr Iftikhar Chaudhry, according to a promise made by the president of Pakistan [Asif Ali Zardari] and myself," Gilani said on Monday in a televised address to the nation. He also ordered all lawyers and political activists arrested over the past week to be freed immediately. Jubilant supporters waved flags and cheered outside Chaudhry's home in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, and he briefly made an appearance on the balcony.

The boisterous crowd saw Chaudhry's reinstatement as a capitulation by the government in the face of sustained campaigning by lawyers and opposition workers, seeking an independent judiciary.

Tariq Mehmud, a retired judge and a leader of the lawyers' campaign, said it was a "victory for those who fought for independence of judiciary".

'Beginning of Zardari's end'

Chaudhry, the former supreme court justice, was dismissed by Pervez Musharraf, the former president, on November 3, 2007 along with 60 other judges, when Musharraf declared emergency rule in a move to extend his presidency for another term.

Most of the judges had since been reinstated since Zardari took over as the president six months ago.

But Zardari repeatedly reneged on election promises to return Chaudhry to his post with analysts suggesting that he feared the chief justice could pose a threat to his position.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from outside Chaudhry's residence, said the "decision really has defused tensions and averted a political showdown".

"A lot of Pakistanis will say that this is the beginning of the end of Zardari ... It is also significant that Zardari did not make the [reinstatement] announcement," she said.

In recent days, US officials, including Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state, had spoken to the country's leaders, urging them to reach a deal.

Washington and other Western nations have been concerned that the crisis would weaken the country's battle against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters operating along its border with Afghanistan.

"This is a statesmanlike decision taken to defuse a serious confrontation, and the apparent removal of this long-standing national issue is a substantial step towards national reconciliation," the US embassy said after Gilani's announcement.

Al Jazeera's Imran Khan, reporting from Lahore, said that Monday's announcement could be seen as an embarrassing climb-down by the government or a move towards national political unity.

March called off

Farahnaz Ispahani, an aide to President Zardari, insisted that the decision had not weakened the government, the president or the prime minister."Instead of weakening the government or the president or prime minister it has actually strengthened the government," Ispahani said.

"We have taken the issue away from those who wanted to use mob violence and intimidation. We have taken the country out of the political crisis in an extremely mature and political way."

The government concession came as thousands of protesters led by Nawaz Sharif, the main opposition leader, held a day of protest in Lahore on Sunday, and set off for Islamabad for the climax of a series of protests they had dubbed "the long march".

To stop them from driving into the capital, the authorities had beefed up security, put the army on alert and positioned containers and trucks across roads outside the city, with violent confrontation appearing inevitable.

Following Gilani's announcement, Sharif said he was calling off his protest march.

"Today the nation has received very happy news. We have said that we will restore the judges and the independent judiciary and by the grace of Allah we have achieved it," Sharif said, adding that "very soon we will play our role in implementing real democracy in this country".

Protest campaign

Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, had thrown his support behind the protest campaign by lawyers and judges, and senior members of his party were quick to claim an emphatic win for the government's climb-down.

He latched on to Chaudhry's cause two years ago but the current crisis began when Zardari ejected the PML-N from power in Punjab last month, after the supreme court barred Sharif and his younger brother Shahbaz from holding elected office.

Gilani's early-morning announcement on Monday on Chaudhry's reinstatement concluded a day of dramatic developments.

Before dawn on Sunday, hundreds of police surrounded Sharif's residence in Lahore, carrying an order for his house arrest.

Sharif rejected the order as illegal and later left the house in a convoy of vehicles as police stood by.

Some of the protesters defied police barricades to gather near the city's main courts complex and pelted riot police with rocks.

Pakistan Army was on high alert during Long March

.

Thousands of anti-government protesters led by Pakistan's former prime minister fought battles with the police on the streets of Lahore yesterday. Army troops were put on the alert ahead of a planned sit-in demonstration outside parliament in Islamabad today. The sit-in poses an open challenge to president Asif Ali Zardari, who faces a deepening political crisis alongside an insurgency by Islamist militants. The clashes have raised fears that today's demonstration may lead to violence in the national capital. Yesterday, police surrounded the home of Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister, in Lahore, putting him under house arrest for three days and detained scores of other leaders of his Pakistan Muslim League, said party spokesman Pervez Rashid. But Mr Sharif defied house arrest to lead his supporters through the streets of the provincial capital of Punjab, Pakistan's most populous and politically powerful province.

Analysts warn that the growing tide of civil unrest could overwhelm Mr Zardari, who has so far chosen crackdown over conciliation.

In Lahore, opposition protesters and lawyers hurled stones at riot police. The police responded with batons and tear gas.

"Events in Lahore have made the government's position extremely untenable. Either the government has to yield to demands from lawyers and the opposition or face a much bigger challenge," said Lieutenant General (retired) Talat Masood, a prominent commentator.

Mr Zardari faces opposition from two different quarters - one from the legal establishment and the other from his political rivals in the province of Punjab. These forces have united to form a forbidding civil disobedience movement that the inexperienced president has struggled to tame by either negotiation or force.

Two years after Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry became a heroic figure for refusing to step down and meet the demand of Pakistan's last military ruler, the former chief justice of the Supreme Court is again at the centre of Pakistan's latest political storm.

Mr Zardari is fearful of a reconstituted Supreme Court that might strip him of his Musharraf-era presidential powers and immunity from prosecution for past corruption charges.

"Pakistan has had a long history of judges and politicians who have easily succumbed to pressure from their rulers, including generals. Iftikhar Chaudhry's decision however to say 'no' to these rulers made him an exceptional figure," says Ashtar Ausaf Ali, a prominent lawyer. "Our people were waiting for a messiah for a very long time. In him [Mr Chaudhry] lies the hope of a saviour to establish rule of Pakistanin Pakistan."

Mr Chaudhry's cause has received added momentum with support from Mr Sharif, now leader of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. A decision by the supreme court last month to disqualify the former prime minister from political contests prompted Mr Sharif and the PML-N to throw support behind the lawyers' protests.

The move was a clever one. In a stroke, Mr Sharif transformed what appeared a narrow interest lawyers' dispute into a wider political protest movement against the largely ineffective rule of Mr Zardari's Pakistan People's party.

Mr Sharif's opponents are critical of his motives, as much as his tactics to encourage lawlessness. They say he has joined the lawyers' protest to gain political mileage rather than being driven by a genuine commitment to judicial independence. Members of Mr Sharif's party stormed the Supreme Court building in Islamabad in 1997, while he was serving as prime minister.

"How can Nawaz Sharif be a friend of the cause of rule of law and judicial independence? Have we all forgotten his history," asks a senior government minister.

But just as few Pakistanis want sharia law imposed across the country, few see any benefit from heightened political instability that could unseat the PPP government. A heavy-handed response to today's protests could bring that day closer.

Chief Justice of Pakistan is restored

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani early Monday morning announced reinstatement of the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and other judges. "I restore the deposed chief justice and others according to the promise made by me and the President," Gilani said in a televised address to the nation. The announcement, in light of the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari, met the main demand of the political parties and the lawyers' community. He said, "A notification to this effect is being issued now." He said Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry would replace Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, who retires on March 21. Gilani said and pledged to "continue the politics of reconciliation." The deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was removed from service by former President Pervez Musharraf on March 9, 2007, sparking a wave of protest that led to his resignation from his office on August 18, 2008.

The prime minister also announced reinstatement of other judges of the Supreme Court and said the number of judges for the apex court has already been increased through legislation to accommodate the reinstated judges.

The prime minister also announced that the federal government would file a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking reversal of the order of disqualification of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, and addressing all issues in light of the Charter of Democracy.

"I invite them to move forward along with all political forces for the implementation of the Charter of Democracy," Gilani said.

He asked the provincial governments to lift the Section 144 immediately and release the arrested persons. He said the PPP had made a lot of contribution to the lawyers' movement and rendered numerous sacrifices. He said shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had pledged to reinstate the deposed Chief Justice.

Gilani said President Asif Ali Zardari also pledged to do the same.

Gilani recalled that soon after securing a heavy mandate from the parliament he had announced the release of the detained judges and also restoration of their emoluments.

The prime minister said the decision was taken in consultation with the allies.

Gilani also greeted Chairman of Pakistan People's Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, lawyers, political workers, and civil society on this auspicious occasion and asked them to celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner.

No More Free Dialysis in Punjab

.

WITH the departure of former Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, the hopes of kidney patients of free dialysis services in government hospitals in the province have dashed. On the occasion of World Kidney Day on Thursday, the plight of poor kidney patients in Punjab was aggravated due to discontinuation of free dialysis services in Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore General Hospital, Jinnah Hospital and other public sector hospitals like DHQ and THQ hospitals in all districts of the province. The previous Punjab government, led by former Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, had given a kiss of life to poor kidney patients by offering free dialysis services in all government hospitals in the province. Mian Shahbaz Sharif had airlifted 60 dialysis machines to Pakistan after paying heavy airfreight charges with a view to providing free dialysis services in all public sector hospitals in all districts of Punjab and save lives of the poor kidney patients.

The kidney patients required two to three dialysis interventions each month costing Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 each dialysis, which is simply out of their meagre resources.

Pakistan Political Leaders & Security Threats

. Saturday 14 March 2009
0 comments

The Pakistani Interior Ministry on March 12 warned top opposition leader and two-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of jihadist plans to assassinate Pakistani political leaders, meaning the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader should avoid appearances at public gatherings. The PML-N responded by saying that Sharif’s security is the responsibility of the government. Shortly thereafter, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani ordered security agencies to provide “foolproof” protection to the PML-N chief. The massive uprising in the form of the gives the government an interest in issuing such statements, preventing Sharif from speaking at public demonstrations. The government is also using the threat of jihadist attacks to try to reduce the number of people attending mass rallies. Even so, the threat that jihadist groups might assassinate top political figures is very real — and the implications thereof are very grave.

Such groups increasingly have targeted top Pakistani officials, such as in the failed assassination attempts on former President Pervez Musharraf and the successful assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and several other leaders. Just days ago, senior politician and North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) provincial minister Bashir Bilour narrowly escaped a suicide-bomber attack targeting him.

Despite the need to continue with business as usual, Pakistani politicians have become extremely worried about their personal safety, especially given the rapidly deteriorating law and order in the country. The jihadists have an interest in creating anarchy, and there is no better way to do this than by killing political leaders — especially leaders like Sharif, despite his reluctance to take a tough stand against the jihadist insurgency. After Bhutto’s death, Sharif became Pakistan’s only leader of national prominence.

Eliminating Sharif from the political scene could very well create a power vacuum, which would exacerbate the political fragmentation in the country. Other than Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the PML-N, Pakistan’s other parties are at best regional forces. Moreover, Bhutto’s successors in the PPP have become extremely unpopular because of their government’s continuation of the policies of the Musharraf regime. And a power vacuum would likely facilitate the rise of radical Islamist forces.

Assassinating Sharif would trigger riots, especially in Punjab, his home province and the largest province in the country. The resulting chaos could help the jihadists expand their insurgency from the Pashtun areas in the tribal belt and the NWFP to Punjab, which is close to the South Asian country’s troubled northwest and home to its own brand of jihadist groups that enjoy a significant social support base. Security in Punjab going the way of the country’s Pashtun areas would represent a significant blow to the cohesion of the Pakistani state, and a significant security threat to neighboring India.

Deal on restoration of CJ Iftikhar is Final - next 48 hours are very important

.

President Asif Ali Zardari met army chief Kayani to ease the growing tension in the region. Earlier in the day, Pakistan army and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani asked Zardari to go if he does not accept a new deal hatched by them in consultation with foreign powers. The new political deal, backed by Washington, London and the army establishment, has quietly been conveyed to Pakistan PM Gilani, to bring down the political temperature in the country.

As part of the deal, the PM has been asked to immediately convince Zardari to demonstrate the flexibility required to break the present deadlock, before the 'Long March' reaches Islamabad.

Gilani has reportedly been given 24 hours to convince Zardari into agreeing to the new political and constitutional arrangement, as further delay will not produce any positive results for the political forces currently on the warpath.

The ball is now firmly in the court of President Zardari, who has to take a decision swiftly on endorsing the agreement brokered by powerful international actors.

If Zardari does not accept the new deal then:

* Army, foreign powers will be left with no option but to implement 'minus-one formula'

* Presidents office will be completely marginalized, Zardari will be removed

* Gilani will take over as power will be restored to PM office

* Nawaz Sharif's PML(N) will join the cabinet

* Deposed SC chief Justice Iftikar Chaudhary will be reappointed.

Terms of the deal:
* Pak PM Gilani has been asked to convince Zardari to accept the new political and constitutional arrangement

* The deal also states the removal of Punjab governor Salman Taseer, who is an obstacle to good relations between the PPP and the PML(N)

* Implementation of the new Constitutional package through the Parliament

* The deal also demands the restoration of Supreme Court Justice Ifthikar Chaudhary.

Since March 11, there have been a series of meetings that have shaped this deal.

The Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani met PM Gilani in Islamabad on March 11, where in the ninety minute meeting the former essentially told the latter to set the deal in motion.

On Thursday, the US ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson met former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The reason ostensibly was after Sharif alleged that there was a plot to assassinate him.

Meanwhile, the PM has not met the president after he returned from his trip to Dubai. He has however been talking to the President over the phone.

UK foreign secretary David Miliband also telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the present situation on Thursday.

Zardari will not be able to complete five-year term: Sharif

13 Mar 2009, 0309 hrs IST, PTI

ISLAMABAD: Amidst a worsening political crisis in Pakistan, main opposition PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif on Thursday claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari will not be able to complete his five-year term in office.

Former premier Sharif, who has been on the warpath since the Supreme Court barred him and his brother Shahbaz Sharif from contesting polls and holding elected office, called on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to implement the Charter of Democracy signed by the PML-N and ruling Pakistan People's Party in 2006.

Sharif told a TV news channel in an interview that Zardari, whom he has blamed for influencing the apex court's verdict, would not be able to complete his term. He did not give details.

He also said the Pakistani people did not trust the judges who had barred him and his brother from contesting polls. Gilani should restore the judges sacked during the 2007 emergency through a notification and the whole nation would support the premier in this action, he said.

Sharif and his party have thrown their weight behind the "long march" launched today by the lawyers' movement to press the PPP-led government to reinstate the judges sacked by former President Pervez Musharraf.

PM Yousaf Raza Gilani ready to act even if it costs him his job

.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has asked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to defuse the current political situation and the PM is about to undo “all the wrongs” in a grand historic move to make his place in history. This is the gist of what PM Gilani told a group of senators during a private talk. He told them he wanted to “decisively deliver” in the present crisis even if he might have to lose his coveted post. “Prime ministers come and go, but what they do remains in the annals of history. I want to do something worthwhile to break the prevailing logjam,” an outgoing senator quoted Gilani as telling him.

He was sitting beside the prime minister at a meeting with outgoing Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro at Wednesday night’s dinner for the retiring senators at the Prime Minister’s House.

“What did Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani tell you to do?” the outspoken senator asked the prime minister. Gilani replied that the COAS expressed his concern over the prevailing situation and wanted him to defuse it.

“You should play your constitutional and legal role in calming down the situation,” General Kayani was quoted as telling the prime minister. “What is the solution?” Gilani asked another senator. “Shah Sahib, you should restore the Feb 25 position by reinstating Shahbaz Sharif as the Chief Minister, undo the disqualification of the Sharif brothers by the Supreme Court and sack Governor Salmaan Taseer,” the senator replied.

“The exit of the governor would take some time to materialise while the other things can be done without any major delay,” Gilani was quoted as assuring the lawmaker. Another senator said that the prime minister made it clear that he was not a “product or beneficiary of the NRO” (National Reconciliation Ordinance).

The parliamentarian said that the prime minister was conscious of the fact that Washington, London and some other powerful capitals wanted the political situation in Pakistan to stabilise and their representatives had communicated their concern to him and other top leaders of the country.

One senator suggested to the prime minister to use his legal and constitutional powers to resolve the confrontation-ridden situation or nothing would be left for the politicians to salvage.

In a chance encounter with PML-N MNA Abid Sher Ali in a corridor of the National Assembly on Wednesday, the prime minister sounded as if he was going to accept all the demands of the lawyers and opposition.

“Abid Sher, what do you want? You certainly don’t want Abdul Hameed Dogar as the chief justice. You want Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as the chief justice, you want the implementation of the Charter of Democracy, and you want lifting of governor’s rule. Will you be happy if all this is done?” the prime minister asked.

The MNA said that not only the PML-N, civil society and opposition parties would be satisfied but also the entire Pakistani nation would be happy if the steps were taken by the government.

“When contacted, an official spokesman told this correspondent that there was no doubt that the prime minister was making sincere and hectic efforts to do away with the crisis-like situation. Everybody has such a strong desire.”

He said that it was well known and the prime minister had also repeatedly publicly stated that he wanted political reconciliation. He added that this was what Gilani conveyed to the senators on Wednesday night as well

Geo News TV blocked on President Zardari’s order

ISLAMABAD: It has been learned that cable operators across the country blocked the transmission of Geo News on the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari.

President Zardari has sent messages to Geo TV administration in which he has said that if Geo has recovered from the courts the losses incurred following the ban on the channel in former president Pervez Musharraf’s rule then it should stop forthwith the coverage of lawyers movement for the restoration of November 3, 2007 judiciary.

The reason why President Asif Ali Zardari has taken the step is that Geo TV is reminding the President his past promises and commitments he had made to the nation and what Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had said about the freedom of expression, restoration of judiciary and Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Long March: 80% business activity stoped in Lahore

Lahore, Mar. 13 (ANI): The ongoing political uncertainty, the lawyer’s Long March and the attack on Lankan cricketers has affected business activity in Lahore, which has seen an 80 percent decline in recent days.

Beyond Lahore, the situations more or less similar in rest of the province, where the imposition of Section 144 has made people hesitant about going out for shopping or conducting other activities, the Daily Times reports.

All markets situated at Panorama Centre, Hall Road, Anarkali, Shah Alam Market, MM Alam Road, Gulberg Main Market, Gulberg Mini Market, Ghalib Market, Township, and Barkat Market have reported a sharp decline in sales.

Anjuman Qaumi Ittehad Finance Secretary Babar Ali Bhatti said the ongoing political situation and lack of security has affected the markets.

“This is the season of marriages, the peak of the business activity. We earn enough during this time period to survive during rainy days, but the peak itself has translated into rainy days,” Bhatti said, while adding that 80 percent slump would have long-term consequences for Pakistan’s economy.

Shopkeepers urged the Government to provide proper security to the markets to instill confidence among visitors.

Is Bangladesh going to be the part of India in 2020?

It seems Mujib-Indira pact come true, Bangladesh going be a part of India,
Shikh Hasina will be very happy, so do all awami Leaguers! Like Seikh Mujib, Hasina can be the life long 'Mukho Montree' of East Bengal, Dhaka

IAF on stand-by, ready to help Bangladesh
With Bangladesh caught in a bloody turmoil after the two-day mutiny by a disgruntled border security force last week, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been put on standby to render assistance to the neighbouring country, if required. The IAF’s transport bases, equipped with IL-76 heavy-lift and AN-32 medium-lift aircraft, have been asked to stay prepared for any commitment to Bangladesh whose fragile civilian government is coming to terms with the rebellion by the paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR).
A senior IAF official, who refused to be identified, told Hindustan Times on Sunday the force was ready to provide logistics as well as humanitarian help.“We follow some drills whenever there is any instability or calamity in neighbourhood. Bangladesh returned to democratic rule barely two months ago,” a source in the air headquarters said.
The IAF had flown relief supplies to Bangladesh in November 2007, under Operation Sahayta, after a devastating cyclone tore through the country’s western coast leaving thousands dead and millions homeless.
In a stand-by scenario, the air force prioritises its commitments to make sure that assets are available at any given time for speedy deployment. The focus was on conserving assets to deal with any eventuality, said another official. It could also entail curbing leave temporarily to ensure availability of air crews.
The IAF’s transport base at Jorhat in Assam is the closest to Bangladesh. It is also one of the biggest transport bases of the force.
The mutinous guards went on a shooting spree at BDR’s officer corps at an annual meeting where troops were supposed to discuss grievances with the seniors. The rebels wanted among other things better pay, change in the command and control structure and permission to be part of lucrative UN peacekeeping missions.

Taxi service for women in Beirut

. Thursday 12 March 2009

BEIRUT: A taxi firm in Lebanon has unveiled a new concept geared toward women, complete with a fleet of pink cars and pink-attired female drivers ready to keep the sexes apart.

"Initially, I thought I would have a rough time finding female taxi drivers given that in Lebanon this is a man's job," said Nawal Yaghi Fakhri, owner of "Taxi Banet" or "Taxi for Women" which was launched on Tuesday.

"But to my surprise I got about 40 requests."

The initiative, the first of its kind in Lebanon, has won the backing of the tourism ministry keen to cater to a growing clientele of wealthy female tourists from conservative Muslim countries in the Gulf region.

"This is the second such company to open in the Middle East after the United Arab Emirates," Lina Ghanem, a spokeswoman at the tourism ministry, told a foreign news agency.

The company's drivers will only serve women.

The idea, however, has not gone down well with some. "This is what you call sexual discrimination," joked Jad Fakhoury, a Lebanese businessman who attended the launch ceremony.

All the arrests were made for violation of section 144, Wasim Ahmed Siddiqui maintained.

Lawyers in black suits and opposition party activists carrying flags and punching their fists in the air marched in Karachi and Lahore, demanding that President Asif Ali Zardari reinstate sacked judges.

Hundreds of thousands of lawyers, opposition supporters and civil activists will join a four-day convoy on the 1,500 kilometers (940 miles) route from Karachi to Islamabad, where it is intended to arrive Monday.

Former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif and Former Chief Minister have said that the time has come for a “big change” in the country and nation would not have to wait anymore to see its dreams come true.

“You will not have to wait anymore as now I am seeing a ray of hope in this country. The change is knocking at the door and you people will not deprive of your rights anymore,” Nawaz tell a big mass rally held here Friday.

Nawaz severely criticized President Asif Ali Zardari over his policies and reiterated his charge that President orchestrated Supreme Court’s verdict that declared him and his brother Shehbaz, former chief minister Punjab, ineligible for public office.

Nawaz said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is not with its co-chairman in his decisions.

“Mr President! take at least your own party on board in your decisions that you are making against us. You betrayed us. We shook hands with you without any precondition and you cheated,” he said.

“We never demand anything for ourselves. I always demand the government something for this nation. PML-N joined the federal cabinet on Zardari’s demand and you see what he did.”

“He is saying that court’s verdict against us is according to laws. So what about court’s verdict against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto? Will you say now that it was also according to laws?”

Sri Lankan Cricketers Targeted in Lahore : Indian Involvement Suspected

.

Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Sources within the security establishment had been aware of an imminent attack being planned by Research & Analysis Wing - India’s premier intelligence agency.

“We had been picking up chatter and had received important information from the R&AW terrorists arrested in recent weeks. An attack was imminent. We had prepared for any eventuality and Alhamdolillah we were able to avert a major catastrophe. The security team fought bravely”, said a source on condition of anonymity.

Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack left five security men dead.

Sports producer Gavin Scovell said security teams responded quickly.

“The guards were brilliant. They weren’t panicking. They were very calm,” Scovell said. “It must have been a terrifying experience, but they handled it well.”

Indian politicians and diplomats have been campaigning hard to have Pakistan declared a terrorist state, in recent weeks. The Indian Cricket Board also made its displeasure known at Sri Lanka’s decision to tour Pakistan, after India pulled out of the tour in the wake of Mumbai attacks.

The attack in Lahore is designed to damage the strong relations Pakistan shares with Sri Lanka. Pakistan has excellent relations with Sri Lanka and has given training and supplied arms to the Sri Lankan military fighting the Indian-backed Tamil Tiger rebels.

The attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers comes just a day after Sri Lankan state media published photographs and videos of Indian ministers including MDMK chief Vaiko, with LTTE supremo V Prabhakaran.

Repercussions of Mumbai Drama - Attack on Sri Lanka’s Team

.

The Indian government through its intelligences agencies is madly busy in obliterating in the regional peace by carrying out terrorist activities in the neighbouring countries, On March 3, 2009 a group of 12 individuals trained by the Raw carried out terrorist attacks on cricket team of Sri Lanka near Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.

According to the government officials the masked gunmen armed with rifles and rocket launchers started an organized and ruthless firing on the team. As result several players wounded and six individuals of police have been killed.

The reasons of carried out assault against Lankan’s are quite obvious because she rejected Indian demand of not dispatching her crick team to Pakistan. Other reason is that New Delhi faced horrible defeat on diplomatic front in the case of Mumbai Drama.

Her intelligence agencies and government is being criticized inside the country as well on international level. She also failed to provide the solid evidence to FBI and Interpol in the past. At many occasions Indian Foreign minister and army Chief threaten that they have various opens to attack Pakistan.

There are reports that these targets have entered into Pakistan from the river side and stayed in various areas of Lahore few days earlier of launching this attack. They have carried out the rehearsals and observed the movement of the team a day prior to assault. Pakistan Rangers and troops deployed on border should keep themselves alive and alert because the terrorists might use the birder while falling back to India.

In short Lahore attack will be taken as repercussions of Mumbai Drama. World community should enforce their pressure on India to stop storming state terrorism in the region.
